SMRJ has concluded with Kyoto City, the "Environmental
Conservation Agreement Relating to Kyoto Venture Facilities," which
is based on the "Guidelines Relating to Securing the Safety of Genetic
Engineering Laboratory Facilities in Kajii-cho, in Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto." Observing
this agreement will not only contribute to environmental conservation, it
will also contribute to the recognition of research activities conducted
by tenants.
Tenants must observe regulations contained in laws and ordinances
relating to the prevention of pollution, and must implement appropriate
and adequate measures to prevent water contamination and pollution caused
by waste and biotechnology.
Primary Restrictions under the Environmental Conservation Agreement

1) Experiments using pathogens
are prohibited.
2) Installation of radioactive
isotope (RI) equipment is prohibited.
3) Work with genetically
modified DNA and experiments involving microorganisms are
limited to those which comply with category
P1 level nonproliferation measures based on the "Law
Concerning the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biological
Diversity through Regulations on the Use of Living Modified
Organisms."
4) Experiments involving
animals are limited to those using mice, and must not exceed
one week in length.
5) An "Environmental
Conservation Plan" dealing
with exhaust and wastewater from experiments, unpleasant
odors and noise pollution must be submitted to SMRJ every
financial year. |
